Ferocactus wisilizeni 'New Mexico Yellow'
Ferocactus wisilizeni 'New Mexico Yellow' - This seed was from plants grown in Albuquerque, NM, Plants had taken -16F in 2011 with minimal or no damage. Good plants to try in colder climates. This was seed from a few garden plants that had Yellow flowers. The plants could still have orange flowers but so far the seedlings have stayed with the mother plants characteristics. These are 2 year old plants from seed. My experience - Ferocactus wisilizeni has shown some cold hardiness when kept dry in winter taking down to -8F. I strongly suggest covering the plants with a small breathable cover and ive seen them survive -17F.
I will have some more cold hardy stock in late 2021 or early 2022. But really I have seen very little differrence from different locations.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 5/6/7 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
