Agave asperrima / scabra Sierra Del Carmen, MX Big Bend Most Cold Hardy Form
Agave scabra or more approprietly named Agave asperrima. Plants have survived in Pueblo Colorado taking -11F once and below zero a few times. Plant took medium damage at -17F this winter (2020/2021). Larger the plant the better they do in winter. Our original seed collection came from Sierra Del Carmen Mountains in Mexico. Plants were found in Texas but were hybridized out by Agave havardiana, why the southern form of this species is large. We have had much luck with species and Agave x protoamericana in winter. These are seed grown plants.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 5/6/7 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
